Teaching graphic design in Poveda?

A dear friend invited me to speak at the San Pedro de Poveda School last June 5. I was lucky enough to have been chosen for the task. It was a workshop for the school's club moderators who needed ideas in setting up a graphic design group for the students.

Now, I'm not an expert in graphic design, but I've tried teaching it to high school students in the past and the experience helped set up the framework for the talk. But as the afternoon wore on, I realized my message wasn't just about design, but advocating art as a method of teaching and learning. Since my audience were primarily academic teachers, I wanted to share how you could use different methods in planning and implementing a lesson.

It was an interesting experience. I got to see an old family friend, and saw the inside of a school I normally would pass by on EDSA. Plus, my wedges were killing my by the end of the afternoon. Still, Friday's was within walking distance, and relaxing over a Coke and lime was good way to end the day.

The Jr. Entrepreneurs strike again!

High five to my Entrep students! Summer's gone, but their projects will hopefully take off this school year. With greeting cards, tumblers and key chains to sell, they have a great opportunity to expand their line of products and earn more money for charity! So, in the pipeline, their website, their logo and their accounting skills. Oy.

Hero Badges

Heroes have to have badges of honor. For the students, to earn one of these is a privilege.

Nothing beats a hand-written card.

I'm testing designs for note cards for future sale. I like the black and white feel of note cards, they're self-sealing too, having a little tab at the back. They still need work though, the "Thank you" cards look a little bare.

All illustrations are hand-drawn on my tablet. : )

I'm making monogrammed note cards. Well, soon.

It's an idea that Creative Ad has encouraged me to do. And why not? I tried making a monogram of the letter z, getting inspiration from an art nouveau poster,...but it still doesn't look right. Will work on it!

Veggie Planet

We finally got over the initial stage of setting up the new resto! Its a relief and a happy moment for me, I'm happy for my friends who own the vegetarian restaurant and that I helped them out with the collateral. Added to the fact that they're dream clients, easy to talk to, accessible, demanding in a good way and understands the design process that they respect my suggestions. If you're in Manila and want to taste heavenly vegetarian meals, (or even a cup of coffee) you can visit them at the Loop, ELJ Bldg., ABS-CBN, Mother Ignacia St., Quezon City, Manila.

The different menu layouts for the resto. The food looks great and they taste amazing as well! Since I was working with print, the colors here arent exactly as bright as I wanted them to be, due to the CMYK - RGB difference. But, happy clients make a happy designer!

Studies for flip-flops! They're not out yet, that would depend on the manufacturer. But I like these...even if they are too "pink".

I want to design a T-shirt

So I gave it a shot. I designed this for Inkfruit.com and will see how it goes. Inkfruit is a community of designers who publish t-shirt designs, people vote for it, and the highest number of votes of a certain design from people gets to have their shirt printed! Wheee! I don't think a lot of people will get this though. *smile*

Mobile green design

I was asked to design a van for a resort, Misibis Land in Camarines Sur. Philippines. The vans had to have the color green and pictures of bikini-clad contestants of Miss Earth 2007. Oh well, they liked the design and it's been printed, but I have yet to see the actual van. (I just have pictures of the final print from a cellphone cam...). Maybe I should stroll down to CamSur and soak up the sun...(click on graphic to see up close)
